Reston Hospital offers the only Accredited Chest Pain Center in northern Virginia, providing the highest level of care from the onset of symptoms through diagnosis and treatment. We apply this same level of care to all our diagnostic services, even if the condition is not immediately life-threatening.

Cardiovascular diagnostic services

Your cardiovascular care at Reston Hospital may involve one or more of the following tests:

Angiogram

Coronary angiography uses X-rays to create images of the inside of blood vessels surrounding the heart.

Coronary calcium scan

This test provides images of your heart's arteries, which helps your doctor detect calcium buildup and identify your risk for a heart attack.

Echocardiography (ECHO)

Echocardiography uses noninvasive ultrasound imaging to detect weaknesses in the heart's rhythm and function.

Electrophysiology studies

Electrophysiology (EP) is the study of the heart's electrical system. The electrophysiologists in our EP lab use advanced techniques to diagnose heart arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms) and provide effective treatments.

Electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG)

An EKG measures the electrical activity of the heart.

Exercise tolerance test

This type of test compares heart circulation at rest with heart circulation at various levels of exertion.

Holter monitoring

Holter monitoring records the heart's electrical signals through electrodes attached to the chest.

Stress test

During a heart stress test, we use medications or measured activity to assess your heart's activity under stress.

Vascular tests

Vascular testing involves a comprehensive range of noninvasive procedures to determine blood flow and circulation or blockages in vessels outside the heart.

4D and color ultrasound

Color and 4D ultrasounds use high-frequency sound waves to create video images of the heart, blood vessels and tissues. This test is often used for fetal heart testing in prenatal care.

Nuclear (molecular) medicine

Nuclear medicine testing, positron emission tomography (PET) scanning and Cardiolite® stress testing use small amounts of radioactive material to assess blood flow and other cardiac activity.

Heart catheterization lab

Our cardiac catheterization lab (cath lab) is staffed 24/7 with skilled specialists who can diagnose and immediately treat heart conditions, such as a heart attack. Cardiac catheterization may be performed as a diagnostic or interventional tool. It involves using X-rays and a small catheter to view the inside of an artery or blood vessel.

Our cardiac cath lab in Reston features:

  • Philips Allura XPER FD20: This is a fully digital, advanced X-ray system designed for precise cardiac imaging and patient comfort.
  • Built-in 64-slice, low-dose computed tomography (CT) scanner: This special CT scanner produces 3D images of the heart and blood vessels for the highest level of accuracy during procedures.
  • Advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): We offer the only 3T MRI in northern Virginia, which provides high-speed, high-definition imaging. As an open MRI, this tool is ideal for patients who may feel claustrophobic during traditional MRI.

Reston Hospital offers two fully equipped peripheral vascular labs, which feature advanced imaging technology for veins and arteries. This technology provides your doctor with a clear view of the vascular field, resulting in reliable detection and treatment and less exposure to radiation.
