Heart disease in women

On average, women develop heart disease 10 years later than men. Heart disease often goes underdiagnosed in women because symptoms of heart disease in females may differ from those in men and can easily be overlooked. In fact, the CDC reports 64 percent of women who die suddenly of heart disease had no symptoms at all.

At Reston Hospital, we emphasize the importance of early detection—in both women and men—through a variety of heart screening and imaging tests to help diagnose heart disease as soon as possible.

Heart disease risk factors

Anyone can develop heart disease - however, the following conditions put you at higher risk for developing the disease:

  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Hyperlipidemia (high fat levels in the blood)
  • Family history of heart disease

Advanced cardiac catheterization lab in Reston

Reston Hospital's cardiac catheterization lab (also called a cath lab) is equipped with a fully digital system that gives our specialists the comprehensive cardiovascular imaging tools they need for critical diagnostic and interventional procedures.

Designed to ensure optimal patient safety and comfort, our cardiac cath lab technology enables precision positioning at high speeds, which minimizes the procedure time.

During cardiac catheterization, a thin catheter is inserted into an artery, usually in your wrist or groin, and guided through your artery. The procedure may be used as a diagnostic tool to diagnose heart disease or as an interventional tool, including as a way to break up a blood clot during a heart attack.
