When discussing treatment for stroke or conditions of the brain and nervous system, you may be offered the option of neurosurgery–surgery, or surgery of the brain, head, neck, spine, nervous system or related blood vessel systems. In these complex procedures, the better the diagnostic imaging, the better the surgery and the better the outcome. Getting accurate and detailed images from inside a patient's head serves a critical role in neurosurgery since they are vital to its success. Advanced therapy through imaging

While performing delicate neurological procedures, your neurosurgeon may use 3-D MRI navigation systems to see detailed images inside your body. Cameras in the operating room pick up the site of a tiny probe tip, and a computer quickly calculates its location so your surgeons know its precise position in the body at all times.

Advanced neurotherapy imaging technologies available for neurosurgery at Reston Hospital Center include:

  • Radiotherapy - Uses ionizing radiation, typically for cancer treatment, to kill or control malignant cells; also known as radiation therapy.
  • Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) - Uses two- and three-dimensional imaging during treatments to direct radiation at the specific targets to minimize or kill malignant cancer cells identified in a pretreatment plan
  • Volume-modulated arc therapy (VMAT) – Another radiation therapy using equipment with an arc-shaped arm that rotates around the patient to deliver treatment targeted on the tumor mass while sparing normal tissue as much as possible
  • Stereotactic biopsy – Uses computer-based imaging to guide the removal of tissue samples, such as a lesion or tumor, in the breast for examination in the laboratory
