Dr. Fitzer was raised in Newport News, Virginia. He earned an undergraduate degree in applied physics and went on to medical school at Eastern Virginia Medical School. After EVMS, he began residency in general surgery Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia, where he developed an abiding interest in weight loss surgery. After residency, he completed a one-year advanced fellowship in the surgical treatment of morbid obesity at the University of Missouri.
Surgery to treat morbid obesity remains Dr. Fitzer’s main interest. Since completing formal training, he has performed more than 3,000 weight-loss operations in private practice. He performs laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, Lap-Band, intra-gastric balloon placement, and cutting-edge endoscopic procedures. He is an expert in revision bariatric surgery.
Dr. Fitzer is the highest-volume bariatric surgery provider in the region. His office has a full-time staff of care providers, including physician assistants, a certified bariatric nurse, and an in-house registered dietitian.
