Labor and Delivery and Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Awards for 2019

Reston, VA — Reston Hospital Center announced today that it is a recipient of the Healthgrades 2019 Labor and Delivery Excellence Award™ and the 2019 Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award™.

The Labor and Delivery Excellence Award distinction places Reston Hospital Center in the top 10 percent of all hospitals evaluated for the exceptional care of mothers during and after labor and delivery, according to Healthgrades, the leading online resource for information about physicians and hospitals.

“It’s an honor to be this community’s trusted health provider for women and growing families,” said John Deardorff, President and CEO of Reston Hospital Center and HCA Healthcare’s Northern Virginia Market. “Our team is committed to providing women in our community with the highest quality of care, close to home. We are also proud to welcome the nation’s top neonatology providers from Children’s National Health System to Reston Hospital Center this summer. We are confident that our new partnership will help enhance our patient experience and quality care even further.”

“The birth of a child is one of life’s most significant milestones. Expectant parents should research and select a hospital with the highest clinical outcomes for the delivery of their baby,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. “We commend those hospitals that have achieved the Healthgrades 2019 Labor and Delivery Excellence Award for the exceptional care they provide for mothers during labor and delivery.”

To help consumers evaluate and compare hospital performance in labor and delivery, Healthgrades analyzed patient outcomes data for virtually every hospital in each of the 15 states that provide all-payer state data for years 2015 through 2017.

Healthgrades found that the variation in hospital performance makes a significant difference in terms of clinical outcomes:

  • From 2015 to 2017, if all hospitals included in the analysis performed similarly to those that received the Healthgrades Labor and Delivery Excellence Award, complications could have potentially been avoided for 105,690 patients*.
  • From 2015 through 2017, patients treated in hospitals receiving the Healthgrades Labor and Delivery Excellence Award had, on average, a 39.2 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award*.

The Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award achievement recognizes Reston Hospital Center for exceptional clinical outcomes while caring for women during labor and immediately after delivery of their newborn, as well as women undergoing gynecologic procedures.

“This recognition reinforces the efforts our women’s care team put forth in providing excellent care for every patient, every day. It also highlights our ongoing drive to achieve our mission - above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life,” said Irene Williford, Chief Nursing Officer of Reston Hospital Center.

“The Healthgrades 2019 Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award recognizes hospitals that are dedicated to providing quality care for expectant mothers and women who will undergo gynecologic procedures,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Healthgrades. “Consumers who do their homework by researching the quality of their local hospitals will make more informed healthcare decisions, and it could make a difference in terms of clinical outcomes.”

Healthgrades analyzed patient outcomes data for all patients (all-payer data) provided by 15 individual states for years 2015 through 2017. During this time, if all hospitals in the analysis performed similarly to those that received the Healthgrades 2019 Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award, complications could have potentially been avoided for 119,203 patients*.

Additionally, from 2015 through 2017, patients treated in hospitals receiving the Healthgrades Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award had, on average, a 33.4 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award*.

This is the 3rd year in a row that Reston Hospital Center has been recognized with both the Labor and Delivery Excellence Award and the Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award.
