(Reston, VA- May 6, 2009)- As a kick-off to National Nurses Week, Reston Hospital Center recently hosted its sixth annual Spring Into Nursing Research Conference. The conference, focused on evidence-based research projects, drew more than 190 nurse participants and 28 clinician investigators.

"Through my years in nursing, performing primary research has become more and more encouraged among the nursing staff," said Cindy Glover, RN, MSN, MBA, Chief Nursing Officer of Reston Hospital Center. She continued, "Research was once entirely in the realm of the physician staff, it's thrilling to see staff nurses asking questions and performing evidence based research."

The conference not only included participants and presenters from the Washington metropolitan region, but from states across the Eastern United States-with investigators traveling from as far as Ottawa Canada. The topics of the research were diverse, but all were related to clinical practice or nursing administration.

A robust nursing research program is an indicator of an autonomous, qualified nursing staff who are knowledgeable of the importance of evidence-based practices. Led by Carol Shaffer, RN, PhD, the nursing research program is an integral part of the clinical experience at Reston Hospital Center, and was a major factor in it being named a Magnet hospital by the ANCC.

The next conference will be held on Friday, May 7, 2010. To learn more visit restonhospital.com or contact Carol Shaffer, RN, PhD, Reston Hospital Center Research Coordinator at 703-639-9437 or carol.shaffer@hcahealthcare.com
