Screening and Diagnosis

Reston Hospital Center physicians are able to perform the following tests and procedures in their offices or the hospitals imaging centers to diagnose gynecologic cancers:

  • Pap smear
  • Pelvic exam
  • Endometrial tissue sample
  • Ultrasound
  • Computed tomography (CT) scan
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Positron emission tomography (PET) scan

The Ann B. Rodriguez Cancer Center recommends the National Cancer Institute’s screening guidelines for women without symptoms or a family history of gynecologic cancers.

Test Procedure Cancers Detected Age Frequency
Pap Smear Cervical and endometrial/uterine cancer to begin three years after the start of sexual activity or at age 21- whichever is earlier as recommended
Pelvic Exam Cervical and ovarian Cancer 18+ or at onset of sexual activity yearly
Endometrial tissue sample endometrial/uterine cancer at menopause for high risk women as needed for symptoms
