Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy are very important aspects of your joint replacement. At the Total Joint Center, while you are an inpatient you will partake in both individual and group physical therapy sessions. Physical therapy and exercise are just as important before and after your time in the hospital.
In your Joint Replacement Guidebook you will find preoperative exercises, goals and activity guidelines. The physical therapy team at the Total Joint Center has outlined activities that will help you become as fit as possible before your total joint replacement. It may be difficult to do exercise before your joint replacement surgery, and please stop if it ever becomes too painful, but the effort will make for a much easier recovery. Additionally, the exercises include a focus on arm strengthening, since you will be relying on your arms for many daily activities as you recover from your new joint. In addition to completing exercises at home, the Total Joint Team suggests joining Reston Therapy and Fitness. Reston Therapy and Fitnessis an innovative combination of rehabilitative services and medically supervised fitness. On the Reston Hospital Center campus, Reston Therapy and Fitness offers patients pre-operative medically supervised fitness and physical therapy, as well as post-operative physical therapy. After completing physical therapy, many patients stick with Reston Therapy and Fitness, with medically supervised fitness and training.
