A more accurate description of this surgical method is less invasive joint replacement surgery, due to the fact that incisions must be large enough to fit the joint replacement implant.
Minimally invasive joint replacement surgery brings many benefits to the patient, including:
- A smaller incision and scar
- Reduced blood loss
- A faster recovery with less pain
- Less damage to the soft tissues surrounding the joint.
Not all patients are a candidate for minimally invasive joint replacement surgery, large or muscular patients are usually not a good fit for this approach, nor are patients who are having a second procedure on the joint.
