Before Surgery

The last few weeks before surgery can be very busy and we recommend to plan ahead so you can focus on your rehabilitation. Your Reston Hospital Center Guidebook for Joint Replacement and the Joint Replacement Orientation will provide more detailed information on what to do in preparation for your surgery.

Appointments

Obtain Medical Clearance

When you were scheduled for surgery, you should have received a medical clearance letter from your surgeon. The letter will tell you whether you need to see your primary care physician and/or a specialist. Please follow the instructions in this letter. If you need to see your primary care physician, it will be for preoperative medical clearance (this is in addition to seeing your surgeon preoperatively).

Surgery Date and Time

Your surgery date and time will need to be scheduled in advance.

Pre-Admission Hospital Appointment (PAT)

A nursing history and assessment is required for all surgeries. After your surgery has been scheduled, please call 703-689-9005 to schedule this appointment. We recommend scheduling your PAT along with your Joint Replacement Orientation.

Joint Replacement Orientation

Please attend the pre-operative Joint Replacement Orientation class. The schedule is available under Education and Classes. The class will review your surgical procedure, your hospital stay and physical and occupational therapy exercises. Family and friends are welcome to attend.

Follow Up Appointment

After discharge from the hospital, your surgeon will require a follow up appointment usually within seven to ten days. Please have this appointment arranged with your surgeon's office before your surgery day.

Discharge Arrangements

Please have arrangements made with family or friends to help you return home.

Checklist

We know that the last 24 hours before your surgery can be busy. Please use this checklist to help you prepare.
