Research has demonstrated that people at risk for diabetes can prevent or delay the onset of developing diabetes by making lifestyle changes that result in weight loss. There is very promising news - You can reduce your risk for developing diabetes by making changes to the risk factors that you can change or modify.
Risk factors for diabetes include:
- Heredity
- Obesity
- Stress
- Age
- Inactivity
- Pre Diabetes
- Hypertension: 140/90 or higher
- Ethnic background: African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Asians
- Dyslipidemia:
An HDL equal to or less than 40mg/dl
Triglycerides equal to or greater than 200mg/dl - History of babies weighing more than 9 pounds at birth
