Urologic Surgery

Urologic Surgery

When medication and other non-surgical treatments are either unavailable or cannot relieve symptoms, surgery is the accepted treatment for a broad range of conditions that affect the male reproductive organs and the organs of the urinary tract.

Urologists are surgeons specially trained in the treatment of the kidneys, ureters, urinary tract, bladder, urethra, male reproductive organs, and adrenal glands. Da Vinci urologists undergo additional training, including the observation of cases, performing cases in teaching settings, and cases on their own with physician observation. In order to treat patients using the da Vinci robot at Reston Hospital Center, physicians must undergo extensive training, and complete a certain number of cases on their own as well. Just as in any other field, practice makes perfect.

Reston Hospital Center is proud to have two da Vinci urologists on staff, Dr. Nicholas Lailas, who serves as the Director of Robotics, and Dr. Gregory Schenk. To learn more about these physicians, or how you can make an appointment, click on their names, or call 1-877-689-DOCS and request our Consult A Nurse team members to connect you to their office.

Urologic Conditions

  • prostate cancer
  • ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction
  • bladder and kidney cancer
  • vesicoureteral reflux

da Vinci Surgical System

A new category of surgery, introduced with the development of the da Vinci® Surgical System, is being used by an increasing number of surgeons worldwide for prostatectomy and other urologic procedures.

This minimally invasive approach, utilizing the latest in surgical and robotics technologies, is ideal for delicate urologic surgery. Using da Vinci, your surgeon has a better tool to spare surrounding nerves, which may enhance both your recovery experience and clinical outcomes.

Patient Benefits

  • Significantly less pain
  • Less blood loss & scarring
  • Shorter recovery time
  • Faster return to daily activities
