Thoracic Surgery

Lung surgeries are very complex operations because of the large vessels leading to and from the lungs and heart. Unlike the traditional open-chest method, or even the more advanced VATS surgery method, the da Vinci system allows surgeons to perform minimally invasive procedures by guiding robotic arms as they make tiny incisions. The new technique promises minimal trauma to the patient and better surgical results.

Farid Gharagozloo, MD and Marc Margolis, MD, thoracic surgeons at Reston Hospital Center, are the only doctors in the Washington Metropolitan Region able to perform complex thoracic surgery using the da Vinci System. Their expertise is unrivaled. In fact, Dr. Gharagozloo recently co-authored the textbook Robotic Surgery, which is now in use in medical schools and teaching hospitals around the world.

Only early stage lung cancer patients, and patients with non-cancerous lung nodules, are candidates for the robotic procedure. The benefits include shorter hospital stays and decreased pain and discomfort. The most important benefit is increased surgical precision and better clinical outcomes.
