Diabetes Center
Reston Hospital Center's Diabetes Center offers diabetes care and education for those with all forms of diabetes and pre-diabetes. Education is essential in managing your diabetes. We follow the ADA’s National standards for education. You will be given the tools to effectively manage your diabetes and avoid the complications of diabetes. We have a caring and devoted staff that works with you and your doctor to achieve the best possible outcomes.
Individual Appointments with Dietitians or Diabetes Nurse Educators
In some instances it is important to meet with a diabetes educator or dietitian on an individual basis. The staff is happy to meet with patients on an individual basis. Please call 703-689-9164 to speak with an educator.
Gestational Diabetes
Gestational diabetes occurs in women who have never had diabetes before but have high blood sugar levels during pregnancy. Gestational diabetes affects about 2-10% of all pregnant women--about 135,000 women per year.
The Gestational class at RHC is a program designed to teach you everything that you need to know to manage your gestational diabetes. The initial treatment for gestational diabetes is medical nutritional therapy. The Registered Dietitian (RD) will design a meal plan just for you and review the healthy eating plan. Additional topics taught include: an overview of gestational diabetes, nutrition and meal planning, monitoring blood sugar, hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, medications, insulin instruction, exercise, prevention of diabetes in the future and more.
This class requires a physician's referral and you must call 1-877-693-DOCS (3627) to register.

Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. We understand that learning you have diabetes can be frightening. The staff of the Diabetes Center can provide you with the necessary education and skills to properly manage your diabetes so that you can live a long, healthy life.
Our classes are taught by a Registered Dietitian and Diabetes Nurse Educators. These classes are designed to educate you on all aspects of management and care of your diabetes. The class includes:
- Healthy eating
- Being Active
- Monitoring
- Taking Medication
- Problem Solving
- Healthy Coping
- Reducing Risks

Steps to Sign Up for a Type 2 Diabetes Class
- Please call Consult a nurse at 1-877-689-3627 to sign up for the class. You must sign up for class prior to attending. If you have questions about the class or your diagnosis please call our office at 703-689-9164.
- Please check with your insurance about coverage for diabetes self management education. If your insurance requires a pre authorization you will need to get that also from the referring physician.
Please bring the following items to the first class or appointment:
- A blood glucose meter and log book if you already have one. If not, we will provide one for you.
- A referral from your from your doctor with his/her signature is required and must be brought to the first class or appointment.
- Lab work from the past 6-12 months. If you don’t have a copy, please call your doctor’s office and ask them to fax it to Reston Hospital Center’s Diabetes Education Center at 703-689-9107.
- Please click Patient Health Questionnaire to complete a patient assessment. Please complete this to the best of your ability and bring it with you to the first class. Please contact us at 703-689-9164 if you are unable to open and print the document.
- Feel free to bring a spouse, significant other or other support person to attend the classes with you. You may also bring snacks to eat during class. Please do not hesitate to contact us at 703-689-9164. We look forward to assisting you.
Type 1 Diabetes
People with Type 1 diabetes are seen on an individual basis. Each patient is assessed for current knowledge base and then an individualized plan of care is created. The Dietitian and Nurse Educators provide education on all aspects of type 1 diabetes education.

Blood Glucose Log Sheet-advanced
Pre-diabetes
Most people experience some degree of pre-diabetes before they are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. The blood glucose values are higher than normal in pre-diabetes, but not high enough to be considered diabetes.
The education program for pre-diabetes instructs patients on how to make small changes for big differences in preventing or delaying the onset of Type 2 diabetes. There is very promising research that shows the positive impact that early action can have in the prevention and management of Type 2 diabetes.
Topics include: an overview of pre diabetes and how to make small changes for big differences in preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes. Class is held in conference room A in the West Wing Tower of Reston Hospital Center from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM once a month.
Please register for this class by calling Consult-A-Nurse at 1-877-689-DOCS (3627) prior to the class. There is a $75.00 fee for the class. Payment can be made upon arrival for the class, please bring a check or exact change, or prior to the class, with a credit or debit card, over the phone through Consult-A-Nurse or by visiting outpatient registration located in the Pavilion building.
