Intensive Care Unit
For infants born premature, sick, or critically ill, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, or NICU, provides special care to infants with these special needs. Intensive care nurses, a neonatologist or pediatrician will attend all Cesarean Section and high-risk deliveries to provide the extra support that may be needed.
Neonatology coverage is provided 24-hours-a-day for the 12-isolette unit, and our staff of registered nurses is experienced in providing Specialty Level II Nursery care for babies who need the extra care and technology. You will be updated on your baby's plan of care by the neonatologist or pediatrician and your baby's nurse.
We encourage parents to participate in their newborn's care when appropriate. Reston Hospital Center offers Kangaroo Care to premature babies. This technique involves direct, skin-to-skin contact between the newborn and parent (either mother or father) and has shown to provide considerable physiological benefit.
Our special-care nursery is very family friendly. Parents, siblings 8 years and older and grandparents may visit, unless they have been exposed to or have a communicable disease. Please refer to information on visiting hours for more details.
