Preparing for Baby

Birth, Parenting and Family Education

The birth of your child can be an exhilarating, and sometimes overwhelming, experience. Understanding your pregnancy and knowing what to expect can help you feel more confident, healthy and relaxed. It can also help you take better care of yourself and your baby. Our prenatal education programs provide knowledge and resources to assist you with your pregnancy and parenting experiences. For moms planning on breastfeeding, prenatal breastfeeding classes are available. Our lactation specialists offer one-on-one consultation once your baby is born, both while you are here at the hospital, and once you’ve returned home.

Classes offered include:

  • Baby Care Basics
  • Childbirth Education
  • Breastfeeding Preparation
  • Couples Quest
  • Just for Me: Sibling Class
  • Infant CPR and Safety
  • Birthing Center tours

Choosing an Obstetrician

If you do not yet have an obstetrician/gynecologist, it’s important to find one early in the pregnancy. Use our online physician referral guide to find a listing of our doctors. When finding a new physician, particularly an OB/GYN many women meet with a few doctors to see who the best fit is. All of our physicians are board-certified and held to the highest quality standards.

Choose a Pediatrician

Choosing a pediatrician is a vital step in preparing for your new baby. Your obstetrician may be a helpful source for recommendations, or you may use our physician referral service on our website at restonhospital.com, or by calling 1-877-689-DOCS. If your pediatrician does not have privileges at Reston Hospital Center, we have pediatricians and neonatologists on staff who will care for your baby until discharge. Your baby’s newborn evaluation will be provided to you in order to help coordinate care with the healthcare provider that you’ve chosen.

Packing Your Bag

Pack a small overnight bag to bring with you to the hospital. It is best to pack several weeks before your due date, so that you’ll be ready to go as soon as you feel you are in labor, or your doctor advises you to go to the hospital. A few items that we recommend packing include: Insurance card and telephone number of insurance company; nightgown or pajamas, and a robe to wear after delivery; toiletries; baby clothes; and an approved car seat. Please do not bring medications or prescriptions from home, large amounts of cash, or jewelry.
