Endoscopy is a procedure that allows doctors to visually examine internal organs, including the esophagus (throat), stomach and intestines, using an endoscope–a long, thin tube with a camera on the tip. Various gastrointestinal problems–such as pain in the stomach or abdomen, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, indigestion, tumors and ulcers–can be investigated with endoscopy. It can also be used for some treatments, such as removing polyps or taking tissue samples for analysis.
