Colorectal Surgery

The colon and rectal surgical program is a joint effort of The Comprehensive GI Center and Cancer Care at Reston Hospital Center. This program offers surgical expertise in cancers of the colon, rectum and intestine. At Reston Hospital Center is able to provide the expertise of a major medical center in rectal-sparing surgery and ileoanal restorative proctocolectomies. Colorectal cancer treatment is fully integrated with state-of-the-art diagnostics within gastroenterology and radiology. Additionally, all colorectal cancer protocols coordinate with the Cancer Care physicians to provide access to ongoing clinical trials.

The program also provides expertise in the surgical management of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. We offer therapy for common disorders, including hemorrhoids, complex anal fistulae and anal condyloma. The colorectal surgery program at Reston Hospital Center is also able to provide referrals to urogynocologists on staff who are able to assesses evacuation disorders such as fecal incontinence or outlet obstructions and nonrelaxing puborectalis.

In cooperation with the Endoscopy Unit, the colorectal surgery program is able to offer patients new treatments for small tumor ablation and large colon polyp resection. Reston Hospital Center’s colorectal surgery and gastroenterology team is well versed in techniques for endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) to minimize risk of perforation and this allows physicians to remove lesions during routine outpatient colonoscopy, often without an additional procedure or follow-up screening.

The colorectal surgery team is able to avoid colostomy in most cases. The hospital recognizes that colorectal surgery is a very private matter, and our all-private rooms are a wonderful setting for recovery.

  • Patients with Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and familial polyposis.
  • Patients with anorectal complaints for hemorrhoids, fissures and bleeding.
