Reston Hospital Center Leads the State in Anthem’s Quality Report

March 10, 2010

As the nation attempts to fix the healthcare system, one hospital is getting it right

Reston, Virginia, March 10, 2010 – Based on select quality of care measures, Reston Hospital Center has earned the highest ranking in the state of Virginia, according to the most recent results from Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s Quality-In-Sights®: Hospital Incentive Program (Q-HIP®).

“As the nation’s healthcare system remains under the magnifying glass, Reston Hospital Center is exceeding national standards for quality care and being rewarded for our efforts,” said William Adams, CEO of RHC. “This ranking doesn’t just reflect excellent patient outcomes, but also the cost-savings that come from providing better patient care. This couldn’t have been achieved without the constant commitment of our nurses, physicians and staff to put patients first.”

Q-HIP uses metrics that fall into three broad categories: clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction and patient safety. They include a hospital’s complication rates in cardiac procedures; scores on a national surgical outcome improvement project, which includes such measures as the surgeon giving the right antibiotic at the right time before a patient’s surgery, in order to prevent infection; and compliance rates with the American College of Cardiology’s best practices for the treatment of heart failure in the emergency room and inpatient units. These metrics are endorsed and developed by the American College of Cardiology, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, the National Quality Forum, the Leapfrog Group and the Society for Thoracic Surgeons, among others.

“As a physician, I am constantly measuring what I do and researching ways to bring about the best patient outcomes possible. It is just something that we do in healthcare,” said Thomas Fleeter, MD, an orthopedic surgeon and the chairman of RHC’s board of directors. “Knowing that the hospital has done so well on these dozens of quality measures, gives me confidence as a physician, and gives my patients confidence, in choosing Reston for their surgeries.”

Q-HIP is not the only ranking in which Reston Hospital Center has excelled. The hospital consistently appears at the top of the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) core measures rankings, and has been recognized by the Society of Chest Pain Centers as a Certified Chest Pain Center with PCI, by the American Nursing Credentialing Center with Magnet designation, and by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses with the BEACON Award for Critical Care Excellence.
